Sorry, this is not an upcoming triple-threat match at UFC 110. The three former champions took part in a covershoot for Fighter’s Only Magazine and the magazine threw up a video of some of the experience on their YouTube page. This probably shouldn’t be all that entertaining but if you are obsessed with fighting, it probably will be. I’m just glad the best guy got the center spot on the cover.

The identity of the mystery man who attacked the referee during Sunday’s WWE championship match between John Cena and Randy Orton has been uncovered, thanks to pro wrestling’s number one reporter, Dave Meltzer. The mystery revealed…after the jump.

It’s Brett DiBiase, brother of Legacy’s Ted and of course the son of the legendary Million Dollar Man. Could this mean Brett will be the newest member of Legacy?

Summerslam ’09 results

The biggest wrestling event of the summer was held Sunday night. Was John Cena able to regain the WWE championship from Randy Orton? Who was victorious in the TLC match for the World title: Jeff Hardy or CM Punk? Which major star returned during the show? Answers after the jump.

Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio pinned Dolph Ziggler

MVP pinned Jack Swagger

Tag Team Champions Chris Jericho and The Big Show defeated Cryme Tyme when Jericho pinned JTG

Kane pinned the Great Khali

Shawn Michaels and HHH defeated Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase when Michaels pinned Rhodes

ECW Champion Christian pinned William Regal in 8 seconds. After the bout, Christian was assaulted by Regal, Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekial Jackson

WWE Champion Randy Orton defeated John Cena. First Orton was disqualified for shoving the referee, but Vince McMahon informed Lilian Garcia (perhaps telepathically, since Vince did not appear before the crowd) that the match was to continue. Orton then walked away from the ring and was counted out, but again the match was ordered to continue. Orton then pinned Cena with his feet on the ropes, but the match was restarted again. Cena placed Orton in the STF but a planted fan ran in and put the referee in a rear naked choke. After a new referee took over, Orton gave Cena an RKO for the pin

CM Punk defeated World Champion Jeff Hardy to win the title in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match. After the match the Undertaker returned and chokeslammed the new champion.

Bryan Danielson Signs With WWE

In a fairly surprising announcement, ROH has announced “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson has agreed in principle to a contract with WWE. This is the largest independent signing since CM Punk signed in 2005. ROH writes:

Bryan has been an exemplary talent and a wonderful member of the Ring of Honor locker room and family since the inception of the company. We couldn’t be happier for Bryan and all of his successes, many of which Ring of Honor has been proud to witness first hand.

We congratulate Bryan on the beginning of this next journey in his brilliant career, and wish him all the best as he progresses. Many Ring of Honor fans refer to Bryan as the “best in the world” and we look forward to looking on in earnest as he shows everyone watching the wrestling world’s biggest stage just why that is.

Tonight im going to look at a match I have been meaning to watch for awhile. Its Andre the Giant and “Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff vs “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and the Ace “Cowboy” Bob Orton from Madison Square Garden August 10th 1985.

This match is a part of the Piper vs Orndorff feud. It started after the first wrestlemania when Piper blamed Orndorff for costing them the match. Not really sure of the context of this match. Im guessing Orndorff was sick of being ganged up on and brought in Andre as back up.

This will be the first Andre match I have wrote about on here. The big talking point about Andre is he was really good when he was young but when he got old, his body broke down. That actually is true. But he is still really underrated. As smart a work guy as you will ever see. He knows exactly what to do and when to do it. He also has this tremendous ring presence and charisma that is unmatched.

I never thought of Roddy Piper as a great wrestler. Just always as a great personality. But the more I see of him in the eighties, the more I realise how good he was. He has this big charisma and ring presence about him. Despite having some cartoony offense everything he does has an air of being real.

The match starts off with all four guys brawling. Orndorff takes Piper and bangs his head into Orndorff’s cast. Once order is restored the actual match is started. Orndorff and Piper start off. Going back and forth before Piper tags in Orton. Before tagging out to Andre. Andre starts trying to rip the cast off and choking Orton with the tape! The fans are super hot for this match, but its funny how Andre and Orndorff are working like heels.

Piper attempts to save Orton, only for Andre to start choking out Piper with the tapes. Then choking him with the tag rope and doing that butt bump in the corner. Andre then walks across Bob Orton’s belly.

Orton and Piper finally get the advantage by double teaming Andre and choking him out with the tape. Orndorff attempts the save and gets beaten up too. After a few minutes of being beaten by Piper and Orton, Andre makes his own comeback. Biting Pipers nose then biting Orton before tagging out to Orndorff. Now the match is back where it started with all four men brawling. Piper and Orndorff are trading blows. Orndorff really has great looking punches.

Meanwhile Andre has Orton in the corner but Orton brings his kness up before Andre can hit him with the butt bump. Andre goes down and Orton attempts a move off the top rope that Andre blocks. You’ll recognize it as a clip that was in the Prime Time Wrestling intro for years. Its enough to end the match as Orndorff gets the pin for his team.

In which we learn about Chris Colt

Oh, the the things that Google finds for you…

Chris Colt is a name known to some older fans but unknown to most. He had a reputation for being an incredible worker on the level of Pat Patterson or Ray Stevens (though unfortunately, the only match on videotape from his prime that’s circulating is kind of a glorified squash), and an eccentric wildman whose exploits were stuff of legend among wrestlers and some fans. Several years ago, Dale Pierce, the foremost historian of Arizona wrestling (where Colt had one of his best runs), wrote an article about Colt and his tag team partner/companion Ron Dupree for GayProWrestling.com (not exactly a bastion of wrestling history pieces) of all places. The original article, which I found while Googling for Colt info, is gone but still available via the Wayback machine. Well worth reading, if just for stories like this:

He returned to Phoenix and was fired, when on an acid trip, he freaked out during a cage bout and thought he saw giant spiders crawling up the cage. Making his escape, he headed into the crowd, swinging wildly, and starting one of the worst riots ever in Phoenix.

Greatest Summerslam Matches: (#1) HHH vs Shawn Michaels= Street Fight= SS02

What people forget about when they remember this match is, Michaels had been out for 4 YEARS at this point. He had retired with a badly injured back and started up his Texas Wrestling Academy, helping to break into the business Bryan Danielson among others. There was little doubt that if he were to return to active wrestling, it would involve D-Generation X in some form. Taken from Wikipedia:

At Vengeance, Michaels returned after being out for 4 years. Triple H was given the choice of deciding which brand he would appear for, SmackDown or Raw, and Michaels helped him decide by offering to reform D-Generation X (DX) on the Raw brand. Triple H chose to go to Raw, but the following night, as Michaels and Triple H were in the middle of reforming DX, Triple H attacked Michaels, before leaving. The next week, Michaels was attacked from behind by Triple H, who put his head through a car window. The next week, Michaels told Triple H that he isn’t 100% but he will be at SummerSlam.

What followed was a match so brutal, some believed Michaels would have to take more time off for what should have been a reinjured back.

What this, and THEN argue why it shouldn’t be #1.

Vince McMoments: Those jogging suit things and his laugh and being sad about Andre in WCW and stuff

In 1991, when Prime Time Wrestling switched to a new format of skits in front of a live studio audience in between taped matches, Vince McMahon became the new host. Also in the midst of promoting the World Bodybuilding Federation, he made some odd fashion statements, even by his standards.

So here’s a video of Andre The Giant’s last American TV appearances. First he’s on Prime Time Wrestling making Bobby Heenan crush grapes with his bare feet as Vince watches, laughing THAT laugh and wearing some sort of unsightly Zubaz jogging suit thing that only he would wear. Then there’s Andre’s appearance at WCW Clash of the Champions XX in 1992, which doubled as a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the debut of wrestling on TBS. Seeing Andre on WCW programming without any warning reportedly made Vince very sad.
